Once called "The Great American Desert", Nebraska is situated in the midwest. It borders Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota, and Wyoming. The name Nebraska came from an Oto Native America word that means "flat water", referring to the Palette River which means, in French, "flat river".
The capitol is Lincoln, and it was admitted into the Union on March 1, 1867, being the 37th state. It is a Great Plains state- most of the land is flat. Nebraska is the only unicameral legislature. It is a large producer of agriculture such as corn, soybeans, and wheat, as well as grain processing and electrical machinery.
